Understanding BMI: What It Measures, and What It Misses

Body Mass Index, or BMI, is one of the most widely used health screening numbers in the world. It is popular because it is cheap and fast: with only your height and weight, you get a single number that roughly places you on a scale from underweight to obese. But BMI is frequently misunderstood, both by people who trust it too much and by people who dismiss it entirely. The truth sits in the middle.
How BMI is calculated
In metric units, BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters. If you weigh 70 kg and stand 1.75 m tall, your BMI is 70 / (1.75 × 1.75), which is about 22.9. In imperial units the formula is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703. Both versions produce the same number; they just handle the units differently.
Reading the categories
The standard adult categories are: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. These thresholds come from population-level studies linking BMI ranges to health risks. For large groups of people, they are a reasonable statistical guide.
What BMI gets right
For most adults with average body composition, BMI correlates reasonably well with body fat and with certain health risks. Public health researchers like it precisely because it scales: you can measure a whole population quickly and spot trends. As a first-pass screening tool that flags people who might benefit from a closer look, it does its job.
What BMI misses
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A very muscular athlete can register as "overweight" or even "obese" despite having low body fat, because muscle is dense and heavy. Conversely, someone with low muscle mass can have a "normal" BMI while carrying an unhealthy proportion of fat — sometimes called "normal weight obesity."
It also ignores where fat is stored. Visceral fat around the organs carries more health risk than fat stored elsewhere, but BMI cannot see the difference. And because the formula was derived largely from certain populations, it can be less accurate across different ethnic groups, ages, and for pregnant people. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific percentile charts rather than the adult thresholds.
How to use BMI wisely
Treat BMI as one data point, not a verdict. If your BMI falls outside the normal range, that is a reason to look closer — perhaps with a waist measurement, a body-composition assessment, or a conversation with a doctor — not a reason to panic or to celebrate. Combined with other measures and professional guidance, it is genuinely useful. In isolation, it is just a starting point.
